COMcheck guide

BIMPro COMcheck is a Revit 2027 add-in. You work in Mission Control, a docked pane with six locked steps: Setup → Scan → Scope → Elements → Preview → Export. The output is an envelope .cxl file you upload into legacy COMcheck Web (not the new lighting-gated site).

Before you start

  1. Account. Sign up at the BIMPro account portal and link your Autodesk ID. There is no BIMPro email/password login inside Revit. Mission Control unlocks from the Autodesk account you are signed into in Revit, plus an active subscription.
  2. Install. Close Revit, run the BIMPro COMcheck installer (it installs under %AppData%\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\2027\), then reopen Revit.
  3. Sign into Autodesk in Revit. If you are not signed in, opening Mission Control will fail with “Sign in to Autodesk required.”
  4. Open the project. You must have a model open; the ribbon command will not start on an empty Revit session.
  5. Prepare the model. The project must have an Area plan. BIMPro reads spatial ownership from that view — a floor plan with Rooms is not enough. Results also follow type names. At minimum:
    • Create a Revit Area plan and place Areas for every program space, with stable names.
    • Run Area boundaries on both sides of demising walls.
    • In Setup, pick this view as Spatial ownership source (Area plan).
    • Name thermal-boundary interior walls with Energy Wall and take them to deck or a modeled lid.
    • Put assembly tokens in shell wall type names (Tilt-up, IMP, PEMB, Thermax, etc.).
    • Model weather roofs as Roofs, interior pod lids as Ceilings.
    • Host doors/windows on their walls.
    • Know finish grade plane elevation from civil (you will type this in Setup).

Optional sanity check: BIM Pro AI → COMcheck → API Status pings the APIs and shows whether Autodesk is linked and the seat is allowed.

Area plan

The Area plan is the spatial source of truth for the run. BIMPro does not invent a floor takeoff from a floor plan or from Rooms alone.

  1. In Revit, create an Area plan for the project (Architecture → Area → Area Plan, or duplicate an existing Area plan).
  2. Place Areas for every program space you expect in COMcheck. Use stable names.
  3. Run Area boundaries on both sides of demising walls so ownership is closed.
  4. Keep that view in the project. In Setup, set Spatial ownership source to this Area plan.

If the list is empty, the view is not an Area plan, or Areas were added after you opened Setup — create or fix the plan, then refresh the list.

Open Mission Control

  1. Open the Revit project.
  2. Ribbon: BIM Pro AI tab → COMcheck panel → Mission Control.
  3. The pane docks on the side. Later steps stay grey until the current step is complete. Use Next / Back at the bottom, or click an unlocked step on the rail.

If the pane is locked, the dialog points to signup, Autodesk linking, or downloading a newer add-in.

Step 1 — Setup

Fill project facts before any geometry is extracted. Next stays muted until required fields are valid; clicking Next saves.

Imported project information (mostly from Revit; you can still edit title/location):

  • Project title
  • Location (picking a known city fills climate zone)
  • Climate zone
  • Code edition (read-only)
  • Active design option (read-only; typically Main Model)
  • Building archetype (warehouse, mixed use, office, etc.)
  • Envelope phase scope (active view / new construction / existing / all phases)

Required settings:

  • Finish grade plane elevation from civil site (ft) — used to split above-/below-grade wall area
  • Building category — Nonresidential / Residential / Semiheated
  • Conditioning category — project-wide default only; per-room BEAT is set later on Scope
  • U-factor source — COMcheck default, Revit extracted, manufacturer, or manual
  • Spatial ownership source (Area plan) — pick the project Area plan that owns room/slab adjacency. This is required. Refresh the list if you just created the view.

Optional information (Site/Permit, Owner/Agent, Designer/Contractor) flows into the CXL. Fill it if you want those fields pre-populated in COMcheck Web.

Then click Next.

Step 2 — Scan

  1. Read the warning: you cannot use Revit during the scan. Do not switch documents or start other work.
  2. Click Run scan (or Re-scan later).
  3. Wait for progress to finish. The pane stays on Scan; it does not auto-advance.
  4. On success you see an element count. Review the architect QA tabs: Passed, Warnings, Serious. The pane opens on the worst non-empty tab.
  5. Fix serious model issues in Revit (missing rooms, unlabeled energy walls, site walls on building levels, unhosted openings, etc.), then Re-scan. Some same-condition demising-wall findings can be dismissed.
  6. When the model is good enough, click Next.

Step 3 — Scope

This is where you define the thermal envelope. The pane copy is: customize which spaces and elements are included.

  1. Geometry to include — check Walls, Floors & slabs, Roofs, and Opening elements (doors, windows, louvers). Uncheck anything you do not want in COMcheck.
  2. Set conditions for rooms
    • Check the rooms/areas that define the envelope.
    • Assign each selected space: Conditioned, Semiheated, Unconditioned, Refrigerated, or Not in scope.
    • Watch x of y areas set — orange until every selected room has a category, green when complete.
  3. Click Compute floor areas. Adjacent same-condition rooms are merged for floor takeoff. Re-run this after changing selection, conditioning, or geometry toggles.
  4. Click Show in Revit 3D. That opens/updates BIM Pro AI - COMcheck so you can check slab ownership and coloring against the table.
  5. Review Scope QA (Passed / Warnings / Serious). Serious surface-ledger findings block Confirm unless you fix them (or suppress a finding you understand).
  6. Click the save/lock control: Lock scope for export. That freezes membership and classifies geometry. Without this lock, Elements and Export stay closed.

Then click Next.

Step 4 — Elements

Optional BIM cleanup. Export membership was already frozen on Scope Confirm.

  • The list is grouped by direction (N/S/E/W, roofs, floors, openings).
  • Orange Unconfirmed rows can still receive a BIMPro Exterior/Interior function stamp in Revit. Green Confirmed rows are done.
  • Confirm all writes every stampable Unconfirmed row in one pass. Stacked walls and linked-model elements are skipped.
  • You can add/remove individual elements from export membership if something was picked that should not ship.
  • Stamps do not change CXL membership. You can continue to Preview as soon as Scope is confirmed.

Click Next when you are done (or skip stamping).

Step 5 — Preview

This is a dry run of what the CXL will contain.

  1. Check read-only Code / location, Project type, optional contacts, and Building areas (BEAT floor areas from Scope). Edit those on Setup or Scope, not here.
  2. Under Envelope values, expand walls, windows, doors, roof, and floors. Confirm U/R, assemblies, orientations, and areas. Confirm component copies values onto matching peer elements. Use Filter by function to narrow the list. Click a row to focus the element in Revit.
  3. Click Evaluate. That scores COMcheck readiness and fills the findings panel (WWR, missing values, floor sanity, etc.).
  4. Fix issues in the list (or go back to Scope/Setup), then Evaluate again until you are comfortable.

Next unlocks only after a successful Evaluate.

Step 6 — Export

  1. Click Download CXL. In Revit you get a save dialog (*.cxl). If Scope left unresolved shell conflicts, export is blocked until you go back and fix them.
  2. Open legacy COMcheck Web: legacy-comcheck.energycode.pnl.gov. The new COMcheck Web requires lighting before an envelope check; this product is architect-envelope-only, so use the legacy site.
  3. Log in to your COMcheck Web account.
  4. My ProjectsUpload project from my computer…
  5. Select the .cxl and confirm imported values.
  6. Review envelope assemblies and fill any remaining COMcheck fields.
  7. Check compliance.

Practical loop

Typical cycle on a live project:

model hygiene → Setup → Scan → fix QA → Re-scan → Scope (rooms + BEAT + compute + 3D) → Lock scope → optional Elements stamps → Preview Evaluate → Download CXL → legacy COMcheck Web.

If the model or room set changes after lock, go back to Scan or Scope, recompute floor areas, and Lock scope again before Preview/Export.
